Blue Light Protection

Don't Read This Without Protection (2)

Where does blue light come from?

Blue light is a type of visible light. It is found in natural sunlight. Prior to the introduction of newer electronic devices, it was not used in man-made light sources. Now, blue light sources include electronic devices such as cell phones and computers, as well as energy efficient fluorescent and LED lights.

Is blue light harmful?

Some blue light is helpful. It helps to regulate our circadian rhythm, which helps us go to sleep and stay asleep. There are some risks with blue light exposure though. Studies have shown that there is a 40 nm wavelength of blue-violet light that causes maximum retinal cell death.

Blue light can pass through the lens in our eye to the back of the eye called the retina and increase the likelihood of development of age-related macular degeneration. The level of light emitted by newer energy-saving lighting techniques is very high, underscoring the importance of protecting our eyes from these lights as their presence continues to increase.

What can we do to help reduce our exposure to blue light?

Reducing exposure to blue light emitting devices is one way to protect the eyes but many people use computers at work and then continue on their personal devices at home. Fortunately, there are lenses available to help filter out harmful blue light. They can be made in most glasses prescriptions. This will help protect your eyes. Some of these lenses have a subtle splash of yellow or champagne appearance to them. Shutting off your electronic devices in the evening hours may improve your ability to sleep as well.

What about outdoors?

The special blue light blocking lenses may be most helpful and practical indoors, but sometimes sunlight may be a bit bright. Many people are aware that sunlight can cause damage and optometrists often recommend wearing sunglasses for UV protection. There are options available to block UV and blue light. Polarized lenses can be very helpful to cut glare especially when outdoors or driving toward the sun.

How will I know if there is damage to my eyes or if I am at risk?

Blue light affects vision over many years of exposure so you are unlikely to feel or see any symptoms or change to your eyes until the later decades of life. The best way to find out if you’ve had retinal damage is to come in for a comprehensive eye exam. Optometrists have special equipment that allow them to assess changes to the eye. Then your optometrist and opticians can suggest the best lens option for you and your lifestyle.

Is Your Family Enjoying Their Screen Time Safely?

eye exams anchorageBy: Elizabeth at Makar Eyecare

screen eyes

Little Tommy came into my office and sat down in the exam chair. His mother complained that he was always rubbing his eyes. I sighed. I had seen this twice already earlier that day with two other young patients.

In our Anchorage office, eye doctors have seen an alarming trend where children as young as 5 and 6 years old are showing signs of eye and vision problems that in the past we didn’t even screen for until adulthood. And all of it is directly related to excessive use of digital media devices.

Ever notice that your child seems to stare, unblinking, at their screens all day?

Staring at handheld devices up close decreases the number of times the eye blinks per minute. And when they do blink while staring at a screen, their eyelids don’t fully close. Blinking lubricates and protects the eye. Bad blinking behavior can cause dry, irritated eyes that may impair your child’s vision and interfere with school. Untreated over the long term, it can damage the cornea and the membranes that cover the eye and line the eyelids.

Staring at the same place for long periods of time creates strain on young, developing eyes that can lead to poor vision early in life. Like adults who for years have stared at a computer screen for work, children are suffering from red, irritated eyes, blurred or double vision, headaches and eye fatigue, all because of prolonged screen time. Untreated, these conditions can cause long-term damage to your child’s vision and even overall health.

With Tommy, because we caught it early enough, I was able to prescribe a relatively simple and inexpensive regimen of eye drops and a healthy time limit with the iPad. Simple. Other kids aren’t so lucky and need corrective eye glasses or kid-safe contacts because it isn’t caught early enough.

What can you do?

As a parent, limiting screen time and encouraging frequent breaks are a good first step on the road to improving your child’s vision and eye health. But the best protection is regular eye exams from an optometrist who understands the challenges of being a parent in the digital age.

Annual exams beginning at age 5 allow us to identify signs of dry eye disease or other issues that can affect your child’s vision early, before they cause long-term damage. Glasses or contacts can certainly correct vision deficiencies, but we may also prescribe vision therapy to re-train the eyes how to fully blink, artificial tears to keep the eyes moist, or other measures that can help alleviate eye issues caused by excessive screen time.

If you bring your child in for an assessment, we will gladly provide a free bottle of kid-friendly eye drops. Most insurances cover your first visit.

What our patients say: “I took my almost 4 year old twins for their eye check up. I really appreciate how every person went over and above to make the experience a positive one for them.” [Sara R, Facebook review]

low vision eye care.

Businessman looking through a magnifying glass to documents

Individuals who continue to have decreased vision after attempting to correct it with eyeglasses or contact lenses are considered to have “low vision”. There are many diseases that cause loss of vision. Some of the most common include:

• Macular degeneration
• Glaucoma
• Diabetic retinopathy
• Corneal Dystrophy

Some types of vision loss can be improved by the use of low vision aids such as:

• Magnifiers
• Spectacle mounted telescopes
• High intensity lighting
• Pocket size telescopes
• Electronic devices

lasik® eye surgery.

Close up of a female eye, macro shot.

LASIK or Lasik (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), commonly referred to as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction, is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The LASIK surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist who uses a laser or microkeratome to reshape the eye’s cornea in order to improve visual acuity. For most patients, LASIK provides a permanent alternative to eyeglasses or contact lenses.

LASIK is most similar to another surgical corrective procedure, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and both represent advances over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of refractive errors of vision. For patients with moderate to high myopia or thin corneas which cannot be treated with LASIK and PRK, the phakic intraocular lens is an alternative. As of 2011, over 11 million LASIK procedures had been performed in the United States and as of 2009 over 28 million have been performed worldwide.

care for children.

If your child has not had a comprehensive eye examination, the best time is now! Studies show that 86% of students start the school year without ever having had an eye examination. This statistic is shocking considering how important vision is in the classroom! The facts below may help put the importance of these examinations into perspective:

80% of learning comes through your child’s eyes. Studies indicate that 60% of “problem learners” actually suffer from undetected vision problems and, in some cases, have been misdiagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hypersensitivity disorder (ADHD). The medications used to treat these conditions can often exacerbate the eye conditions associated with them, causing visual concentration to be even more taxing.

One in four students has a visual impairment. If a child has gone through development without seeing clearly, then the likelihood of that child actually explaining to a parent or teacher that the world is “blurry” or “double” is very low. The child may not know that he or she is seeing poorly.

Amblyopia is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States, and it is generally preventable if caught at a young age. Amblyopia is the medical term for a “lazy eye”. It most frequently occurs due to a lack of use of one or both of the eyes from an uncorrected eyeglass prescription or misalignment of an eye.

School vision screenings are a great way to flag children with sight-threatening conditions, but a screening is not sensitive enough to prompt referral for all learning related visual conditions. Makar Eyecare recommends your child’s first eye examination take place between six and ten months of age.

eye exams.

On your first office visit we recommend you to bring the following:

• Eyeglasses and/or contact lenses
• List of current medications
• Sunglasses for afterwards
• Previous records or prescriptions
• Most current insurance cards

Makar Eyecare takes pride in providing every patient a thorough eye health and vision examination.Preliminary tests will evaluate your pupils, intraocular eye pressures, visual fields, eye muscles, color vision, stereopsis or depth perception, binocularity, curvature of the cornea and the power of your eye.

exam preparation.

Your doctor will test your natural vision and determine your best corrected visual acuity at near and far distances. Our providers take time to ask the proper questions required to ensure an accurate spectacle and contact lens prescription.

Your doctor will usually recommend to have your pupils dilated during your examination. If so, dilation eye drops may be placed in your eyes to temporarily enlarge your pupils. The purpose of dilation is to get a clear view of the optic nerve and retina in the back of your eye. This aids in early detection and treatment of eye diseases that can destroy your vision, such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

Vision Therapy.

Vision-Therapy-Box

Let’s face it. Our eyes are at the center of everything that we do. From the moment we wake up in
the morning, we use them to move in our space and complete daily tasks. In some cases, even
though the eyes see 20/20, their function can be limited due to less accurate eye movements
or eye teaming skills. Whether you think your eyes may be functioning poorly or you are interested
in a sport or activity that requires supreme visual function, vision therapy may be for you.

Studies are showing vision therapy’s capacity to improve reading speed and comprehension.
In addition, some of the most prestigious sport camps and training programs in the world are
incorporating vision therapy into their routine to improve their athlete’s progression. Vision therapy
for diagnosed ocular conditions has also been shown to improve acuity, depth perception, and eye alignment.

Vision therapy is a sequence of neurosensory and neuromuscular activities individually prescribed and monitored by the doctor to develop, rehabilitate and enhance visual skills and processing. The vision therapy program is based on the results of a comprehensive eye examination and takes into consideration the results of standardized tests, the needs of the patients, and the patient’s signs and symptoms. The length of the therapy program varies depending on the severity of a diagnosed condition or the preciseness required for a particular sport or activity. Activities paralleling in-office techniques are taught to the patient to be practiced at home.

Makar Eyecare performs vision therapy and the evaluations necessary to track ocular improvements. If you or someone you know is interested, schedule an appointment with Dr. Elizabeth J. Lane.
