Dr. Anthony Makar is a board certified optometric physician who, after completing nine years of higher education after high school, received a doctorate degree with honors from Pacific University, College of Optometry, Forest Grove, Oregon. Prior to attending Pacific University, Dr. Makar received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with honors from Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Washington. Among other high marks, he scored the highest possible mark, a 100th percentile, on the rigorous organic chemistry section of the graduate school entrance examination.

He is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Alaska Optometric Physicians Association as well as the International Optometric Honor Society, Sigma Beta Kappa. Dr Makar has specialized graduate training and eight years experience inorthokeratology, which allows his nearsighted patients to see without daywear contacts or glasses – surgery free. He is a Vision USA doctor, donating his services to patients in financial need and enjoys providing his services to geriatric populations. He has volunteered in hospitals and local health fairs. Dr. Anthony Makar is continuously educated in ocular disease diagnosis and treatment as well as preventive and nutritional healthcare. He has special interest in the treatment of patients with ocular surface disease – dry eyes, and glaucoma. He provides his patients expertise in design and fitting of specialty contact lenses. Dr. Makar has recent training with over a decade of experience in the eye care field.

Dr. Anthony Makar lived in Anchorage, AK during the 1970’s and then later spent five years in the late 1980’s in Girdwood, Alaska, where he attended Glacier Creek Academy. During this time period, he was a nationally ranked alpine ski racer with experience on three continents and was often ranked top three in the USA for his age. He has been featured on the cover of the Anchorage Daily News sports pages as well as the inside of SKI Magazine. During his final year of NCAA university competition, on athletic & honorary academic scholarships, he represented his home state and UAA. Dr. Anthony Makar is a son of Carol Makar, retired teacher, triathelete, & Girdwood Ice Cream shop owner, and Dr. James Makar M.D.– Pathologist and College Hall of Fame football player.

He has a brother, Mike, who has graced the screens of ESPN and was the World Junior Alpine Downhill Champion and recently retired from the US Alpine Ski Team after representing the USA for more than a decade. Mike is now a commercial pilot and lives with his family in Anchorage next to his brother. Dr. Anthony Makar has a history as a FAA licensed pilot, scuba diver and ocean sailor. His previous work experience has included but was not limited to academic tutoring, heavy equipment operation, construction (commercial), cooking, painting, landscaping, and sanitary engineering (garbageman). He enjoys running, hiking, kayaking, boxing, Krav Maga martial arts & motorcycles. Dr. Makar’s non-work time is spent with his wife, Dr. Rebecca Makar and his two children.
